GAKU (Gakuto Sato) is a contemporary artist born in 2001, working from his studio in Takatsu, Kawasaki. An autistic artist with an intellectual disability, he spent nine years of his childhood in Los Angeles. After returning to Japan, he began painting at the age of 16, inspired by the work of Taro Okamoto.

GAKU became the youngest artist to hold a solo exhibition in the 550-square-meter gallery at Hankyu Umeda. His solo exhibition at a 440-square-meter venue in Futako-Tamagawa Rise also attracted attention. He has held solo exhibitions in New York and Paris and created a large-scale installation in Hong Kong. His collaborations with LeSportsac, GODIVA, THE BODY SHOP, DIANA and other companies have brought his work recognition from global brands.

His work and activities have been featured on Nippon TV’s “every.,” Fuji TV’s “Future Runners,” and TV Asahi’s “Wide! Scramble.” His life story, “GAKU, Paint!,” was published by CCC Media. A crowdfunding project for an art book marking his 20th birthday raised 12 million yen.

His work centers on vividly colored abstract paintings and animal portraits, characterized by layered dots and geometric shapes, bold color combinations, and humorous animal expressions. GAKU paints intuitively, conveying that intuitive feeling to those who encounter his work. His colorful, energetic paintings bring happiness to the spaces where they are displayed.
